June 1-6, italy
Vojta & Ronan

This Summer’s 6-day long Retreat on the beautiful island of Stromboli combines a full immersion in poi spinning with pristine nature and adventure expeditions.
The legendary RONAN MCLOUGHLIN will be teaching Poi together with VOJTA STOLBENKO, June 1-6!

In addition to daily classes & play on a shaded, outdoor stage, we’ll trek up Europe’s most active volcano and watch it exploding (yes it explodes every 30min!), have our private boat-trip around the island, eat delicious Mediterranean food and play fire at various places with the sunset!

This retreat is suited for all levels of poi spinners.
For beginners; get a good foundation by understanding how the different elements are constructed.
For intermediate to advanced spinners; for every exercise we do, you will get a more advanced version that suits your personal level.

Train, spin & relax
On a Volcanic Island

Do you want to train 3 hours a day with Vojta and Ronan?
Apart from that, there will be short workshops in the afternoon at various places that we’ll visit, plus Vojta and Ronan will be always happy to help you individually!
You won’t only learn poi moves and tricks – we will talk about how to incorporate these moves into a performance, how to achieve a good stage presence, you will be taught some light acrobatics, footwork and dance moves you can use in flowarts.
Learn how to learn with Ronan; from his famous “Learning to learn” TED Talk. And we’ll play some theatrical games that will help us to explore more body movement possibilities.

Evening playtime will be dedicated to incorporating the technical knowledge learned during the day into play & performance. As the evening falls at dusk we’ll flow into an impro glow & fire jam with music.
Classes and some night fire jams will be held on a shaded, outdoor Dome stage with an inspiring view of both the ocean and volcano. This place is called “Parco Parco” and it is the primary venue of the legendary event “Festa del Fuoco di Stromboli”

for beginners to advanced

Every day from 9 am to 12 am on the shaded outdoor stage
Classes are ideal for both beginners and advanced spinners. We won’t only focus on tricks, so even if you aren’t familiar with some poi moves yet, you will still benefit from the body movement workshops. And you will be taught the moves you miss.

Workshops will be held in a group and also individually (for some moves we might make small groups depending on the skill level and your interests). To benefit the most from this retreat, be sure to know the basic poi moves, such as; 3-beat weaves (forward & backward) windmill, watermill, hip-reels & turns, butterfly (same-time, split-time), buzzsaw.
If you can’t do some of the moves listed above, don’t worry! We will teach you that. However, if you want to be prepared, look up some tutorials (such as those on Playpoi.com – those are great!)

Ronan will be teaching his “four elements” theory of poi spinning. Get into the geometry of spinning, and explore all the different possibilities of speed and movement within the different elements.
Vojta’s workshops will be focused on dance-based moves, contrast, stage presence, and even some light acrobatics.

The daily poi classes

During the poi classes we will be focussing on:

– increasing our ability to learn fast by practicing coordination and hand independence
– beautifying moves that you already can do (also individually)
– incorporating our body into the motion
– contrast moves, transitions between different planes, cross-points
– anti-spin based moves (flowers, CAPs, wall plane & wheel plane hybrids and variations, 3Ds, cat-eyes)
– pirouettes, tracers, negative space
– contact poi, tosses
– under the legs, jumps
– hyperloops (orbitals, learning to exit from orbital, infinite hyperloops, looped-turning and plane changes)
– wraps (spiral wraps, body wraps)
– stalls, transitions between all the moves
– advanced butterfly variations
– behind the back moves
– triple poi and meteor basics (from one-handed weaves to one-handed anti-spin patterns)
* note that we might not be able to do all of this, however if we lack enough time the classes will be adapted to your preferences
